Making Cinnamon Rolls with Dre

Making Cinnamon Rolls with Dre

One of the many things that I rave about my sister, Andrea, is that the girl can cook. As in, "Hot damn! Are these the Nobu seared scallops with jalapeno sauce?! You made these?!" She has mastered how to make the perfect steak and potatoes, replicate many of her favorite high end restaurant dishes, and lucky for us, takes requests from our family. Most impressively, Dre, as I call her, makes most of her magic happen in what she describes as the 'busted kitchen' - old, ugly, and falling apart - that came as is when she bought her fixer upper home.

With this unprecedented 'Covid Season,' where as a family who is quarantining together has adopted the 'let's bake A LOT' attitude, I love that after who knows how many pleas, Dre let me document the making of one of her masterpieces. Like the times we are in, it's about using our resources, as little or as much as they may be, to get by: thank you busted kitchen for giving Andrea the space to get creative to share her love for us through food! Thank you baking for giving us an activity we do collectively (I mixed the frosting, thanks!) and thank you Andrea for taking my request for these Cinnabon copycat cinnamon rolls and for letting me post these photos when we never had any intention in sharing them ha!

Stay home, be kind, and don’t worry about that summer body cause cinnamon rolls trump everything! - Evelyn

There is not one cinnamon roll recipe that calls for throwing the dough in the air, however I asked Dre to do so for dramatic effect. Give it some oomph into the air, girl!

While she let the dough rise, she made the cream cheese frosting that I eventually mixed: my contribution to this project! Ha!

Dre always reminds me that baking is a science: everything really should be exact, even the length of the rolled dough hence the measuring tape!

Ladies and gentlemen, the before, above. Below, THE AFTER. Perfectly crisp, smelling like heaven aka cinnamon sugar.

Viola, homies! Look at those gooey, swirly, crisp on the outside, doughy but not undercooked middle, cinnamon rolls, MADE WITH LOVE.

Cactus Garden San Diego Engagement Session: Ivy and Bryan, Part One

Ivy and Bryan are a couple who's interests I can relate to: lovers of travel - they got engaged during their second trip to Thailand! - and complete foodies, often making intricate dishes themselves at home, these two have been together since college. Having met at Arizona State University, they wanted a southwestern vibe for their first engagement session location and I immediately thought of the Cactus Garden at Balboa Park. With plenty of dirt paths and cacti greenery, the Cactus Garden is as much 'desert vibe' as we can get in San Diego proper, and Ivy's red-orange dress completely popped and coordinated so well with Bryan's chambray button up: please file these two under 'super chic engagement outfits' Ha!

Downtown San Diego Engagement Session: Ivy and Bryan, Part Two

Ivy and Bryan's love story started in Arizona as college students and has evolved where they are now residents of the East Village in San Diego, so what better backdrop for the second part of their engagement session than Downtown San Diego. With champagne in hand, an iconic sunset, and decked out in chic outfits ready to take on the town, Ivy and Bryan's San Diego rooftop engagement session is one of my favorite sessions to date!

Ivy and Bryan, thank you for asking me to document this very special time in your lives: no pressure on me, right?! Ha! I adore you both and am grateful to call you both friends. xo, Evmo

Thursday Club Wedding: Jacque and James, Part One

Jacque and James came to me knowing what they wanted: a classic wedding with touches of green and gold in their reception decor, plenty of time for them to embrace the moment together, and a raging dance party where every awesome and funny dance move would be documented. Not only did this all align with my values and ideal wedding, but I loved how decisive they were about what they wanted.

Jacque and James' wedding day kicked on stunningly: taking advantage of the Spanish style architecture at Kona Kai Resort San Diego, both Jacque and James got ready on property and had their First Look which they followed up with photos of their bridal party. With a lot of their photos out of the way, we all headed over to The Thursday Club for their ceremony and reception in Part II of their wedding day!

Thursday Club Wedding: Jacque and James, Part Two

After Part I of Jacque and James' wedding day, these two were ready for their ceremony and reception at The Thursday Club, all coordinated by the lovely Courtney of Breezy Day Weddings.

One of the way in which Jacque, James, and I bonded was over our mutual love for travel, so I was beyond excited to hear that their Thursday Club reception would be travel themed! With paper airplane nameplates and photos commemorating many of the global locations they have visited together, Heather of Breezy Day Florals completed the decor with her magical floral touches!

Before walking into this gorgeous reception that would later turn into an awesome dance party, Jacque and James requested sunset photos at Sunset Cliffs. With one last chance of taking in the day together, just them two, I encouraged them to take in what they saw, what they smelled, what they heard. Whenever they wanted to be transported back to this day and all of the wonderful feelings that came along with it, they can tap on the memory of these senses.

Jacque and James, you know I adore you! When a Type A couple meets and Type A photographer, we are a match made in heaven! I will forever be grateful that you allowed me to document your day, will adore you forever for being so organized and sharing a similar vision as me, and I do want to visit you in Chicago one day :) xo, Evelyn
